Orla Kaminska began her foundation studies at the Grennan Mill,
Thomastown, Co Kilkenny, and went on to study ceramics in the
National College of Art and Design, graduating in 1987.
In
1988, based in Co Cork she went into partnership and set up Tileworks
Studio specializing in architectural ceramics,(sponsored by IDA,
FAS and the Crafts Council). In 1989 Tileworks moved to Dublin
and operated until 1996.
Commissioned through Tileworks, she has worked on projects for
The Office of Public Works as well as private and corporate projects.
A recent architectural commission was the "Serpentine
Seat" , a 40m mosaic feature, for the new Dunlaoghaire ferry
terminal.
Other commissions, "Fabrications" now
exhibited in the Castle Hall in Dublin Castle for European Presidency.
"Fabrications
" is a series of ceramic and forged steel wall hangings are
based on a specific response to the history of Castle Hall and
Dublin Castle as a whole.
The imagery of these panels is a juxtaposition of familiar and
ancient abstracted markings influenced by the layered historical
fabric of Dublin Castle. Ochres and oxides are dusted onto the
clay surface representing the trace elements found in the stone
and also revealing other aspects found and marked on the fabric
like panels. The worn and ragged layers are suspended by hooks
from forged poles like fragments or shards, perhaps excavated
on this historical site.
Studio work continues to
explore the use of scrafitto on the clay surface combined with
metal details; metals being used as a fired oxide in the clay.
Both the wall panels and free standing sculptures are combined
with forged metal and copper detail. The exploration of scrafitto
technique is a means of expression of mark making of both historical
and contemporary scripts and symbols.
